German 1C/2C
This is a two-semester course that serves as an introduction to the German language by means of the communicative approach. The student encounters the basic grammatical structure of the language in its cultural context through a variety of activities, and carries on simple conversations. General emphasis is on listening and speaking. The course is designed for the college preparatory student. This course meets the UC “e” foreign language requirement.

German 3C/4C
This two-semester course is the second year of study for the German language. It is a continuation and expansion of the basic language patterns of German 1C and 2C. Emphasis is on increasing communicative skills and cultural awareness of all German-speaking people. The student must have received at least a “C” in German 2C to be enrolled. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language and “g” elective requirements.

German 5C/6C
This two-semester course is for students who have completed two years of study of the language with a “C” grade or better. The student should attain a mastery of fundamental German grammar and should be able to converse with a minimum of grammatical errors. The students are expected to participate freely in all classroom activities. They will attempt simple compositions related to daily experiences or reading matter of the course. Reading selections include works by recognized German authors. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language and “g” elective requirements.

German 5H/6H
A two-semester course conducted exclusively in German that requires greater depth, quality and linguistic acumen from the student than the college preparatory curriculum. Students should demonstrate above average command of sentence structure and all basic grammar in oral and written language by the end of the course. Course requirements include, varied and consistent oral participation, weekly addition of a significant number of words to the student’s recognition and usage vocabulary, regular study of literary works of recognized merit, and writing development assignments. Prerequisite: Completion of German 3C-4C, or equivalent, and teacher recommendation. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language and “g” elective requirements.

German Language AP
A two-semester course in German language designed to provide the capable student with the opportunity to take part in a college-level course while attending high school. The curriculum is consistent with the Advanced Placement Course Description published by the College Board. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language and “g” elective requirements.

Spanish 1C/2C

Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1C/2C
A two-semester course designed to help the college preparatory native Spanish speaking student gain literacy skills in Spanish. Basic reading is emphasized, using short stories, articles, and simplified novels. Grammar is introduced. History and cultures of Hispanic people are studied. Specific writing projects are assigned. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language requirement.

Spanish for Spanish Speakers 3C/4C
A two-semester course designed as a continuation of Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1C and 2C, with more advanced grammar, non-simplified reading materials, spelling lists, and more advanced vocabulary study. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language and “g” elective requirements.

Spanish for Spanish Speakers 5C/6C
A two-semester course designed as a continuation of Spanish for Spanish Speakers 3C and 4C. It is an intermediate course with continued emphasis in reading, writing, grammar, and spelling. It also covers the reading of more difficult literary works, as well as the continued study of Hispanic culture and history.

Mandarin Chinese 1C/2C
Introductory Mandarin Chinese Language is a one-year course designed for non-speaking students of the Chinese Mandarin language by means of the communicative approach. Students will practice listening, writing, reading, and speaking as they learn the basic language components; the alphabet, the Chinese sound system, the four tones, grammar, and vocabulary in context. Additionally, Chinese culture, customs and practices will be taught. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language requirement. Prerequisite: None

Mandarin Chinese 3C/4C
The course is designed to prepare students to meet the second language requirement for high school graduation and college. It is also open to students who wish to pursue their personal interests in Chinese language and culture. The class is conducted in a learner-centered environment where Pinyin, characters, word usage, sentence patterns, and grammar are taught. Students will advance the understanding of the connection between the language and culture. Prerequisite: Mandarin Chinese 1/2C with a grade of “C” or higher or teacher recommendation.
